GLOBAL INNOVATION CENTER
Client: Liberty Property Trust
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Year: 2017
Area: 175,000 sf
Synopsis:
The 175,000 sf Global Innovation Center for Axalta Coating Systems houses a high-bay R&D Pilot Plant with a two-story laboratory wing in the Philadelphia Nay Yard. The main interior program elements include business and professional offices, research and development laboratories, small batch manufacturing, and customer training. The two-story loggia that runs the full length of 11th Street from Constitution to Kitty Hawk works in concert with Penn State at the Navy Yard to define League Island Park as a major public space conceived as part of the redevelopment master plan.
As a threshold element between private and public, the colonnade frames and embraces the park with a two-story glass façade to maximize daylight in the workplace while utilizing the angled vanes that form the loggia to reduce glare and shade research staff from the low angles of the late afternoon sun. This industry leading research facility respects and celebrates both time and place in the way that Axalta’s technology innovation continues the historical use of the Navy Yard while the building reinforces the historic expression of public space and heroic structures. As the industry continues to demand more environmentally compatible solutions, innovation and research is critical to Axalta’s ability to develop the next generation of coatings and products. The Global Innovation Center at the Philadelphia Navy Yard will serve as the hub of the company’s research and development program worldwide.
