The facility brings together faculty, clinicians, and students from across Rowan University and Virtua Health, creating a collaborative environment for translational biomedical research. By aligning multidisciplinary expertise through this partnership, the center is designed to accelerate discovery and deliver meaningful improvements in patient care and community health. Institutes: Two floors are dedicated to new Institutes featuring researchers from across Rowan University, Virtua Health College, and Virtua Health. The facility supports collaboration among faculty, clinicians, and students through two dedicated research institutes Institute for Transplant &amp; Regenerative Medicine Research The work of this institute will include innovative approaches for self-powered regeneration, nano sutures for tissue regeneration, resorbable grafting for improved patient outcomes, and enhanced imaging and segmentation. Center for Research &amp; Education in Advanced Transportation Engineering Systems (“CREATES”) has worked for years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on pavement engineering research.&nbsp; The new Seasonal Frost Test Facility is a large, climate-controlled indoor laboratory designed to simulate freezing and thawing conditions year-round. Researchers can precisely control both air and ground temperatures to study how cold environments affect infrastructure, vehicles, materials, and engineering systems. At its core, the building is designed to support transformative student learning and leading-edge research through flexible, interdisciplinary environments that encourage discovery, innovation, and engagement. As a physical catalyst for collaboration, it reinforces Rowan’s leadership in engineering and materials science while creating opportunities for meaningful partnerships across the School, the University, industry, government, startups, and the broader emerging technology research community. Key capabilities include: Ambient temperatures ranging roughly from - 20°F to above 90°F. Artificial freezing of large ground sections to create controlled frost depths. Full-scale testing of roads, airport pavements, foundations, buried utilities, and construction materials. Simulation of repeated freeze-thaw cycles that would otherwise take years outdoors. The new Seasonal Frost Test Facility is being funded through a $30 million USACE grant to expand research: Arctic and subarctic construction materials Pavement performance during seasonal freeze-thaw cycles Permafrost impacts on infrastructure Transportation systems for cold regions Cold environments create unique engineering challenges for military operations. The facility supports research such as: Airfield damage repair: Developing concrete and repair materials that can restore damaged runways in freezing conditions within hours instead of days. Military mobility: Understanding how frozen or thawing ground affects heavy military vehicles. Road and airfield design: Improving pavements that must withstand harsh winter conditions. Buried infrastructure: Evaluating how frost affects pipelines, cables, and utility systems. Cold-weather construction: Testing new materials before they're deployed in Arctic or high-latitude environments. Although funded in part for defense needs, much of the research also benefits civilian infrastructure. Results have been used by: State transportation agencies Universities Civil engineers Airport authorities Arctic and northern communities Research has included pavement studies, foundation engineering, and infrastructure resilience in cold climates. Rowan also already operates an Accelerated Pavement Testing Facility with a Heavy Vehicle Simulator obtained through a cooperative agreement with USACE. Media, PA Date: Ongoing, Fall 2021 Area: 25,000 sq. ft. Synopsis: In neighborhoods across the country, there are buildings that inspire a sense of collective purpose, civic pride, and shared experience. However, many of these buildings have suffered from years of disinvestment and deferred maintenance. As a local landmark, The Roosevelt School was formative for the education of thousands of Middletown Township residents and as a civic beacon. Over the past two decades the Roosevelt School has languished, until 2016 when it was purchased by the Township as a site to locate various scattered civic services. Erdy McHenry Architecture has transformed the Roosevelt Elementary School into a new Community Center and Library. As a contemporary library, it goes beyond books to include Community Outreach and Education functions that teach through experiential and tactile means. The central atrium space will be surrounded by Tutoring Rooms, a Recording Studio, Community Collaboration Spaces and a hands-on Maker Space that will feature hands-on robotics and digital fabrication learning for the local community. The central gathering space will display a 2-story digitally fabricated sculpture created by Penn's Robotics Lab at the Weitzman School of Design. The sculpture will be on permanent exhibit at the community center as an outreach ambassador for the University of Pennsylvania and will be an example for young students to see the technical and artful outcomes for careers in digital technologies. an off-campus residential tower located in the heart of Philadelphia.&nbsp; The tower extends the Philadelphia skyline to the western bank of the Schuylkill River and defines a gateway to University City, known for its large concentration of colleges, universities, health systems and think tanks. Dubbed one of the tallest student apartment buildings in the United States, evo at Cira South sets new standards for student urban apartment living and along with its one acre green roof, Cira Green, this project is in line to establish new standards in sustainability and storm water management, targeting LEED Gold. Conceived on a challenging narrow site located over an existing rail line and adjacent to an existing parking facility, evo offers a new housing option located within walking distance to retail, mass transportation and university facilities and features furnished units with bed-bath parity. Conceived as a vertical community, the 34-story tower is punctuated throughout with smartly located internal public squares, which create a critical component for bringing together students, faculty, staff, and the general public to form shared communities providing a supportive, human-scaled residential experience. Evo and Cira Green promote socialization of its residents through an architecture of community. Its shared spaces vary in scale and function to provide multiple venues for interaction and community. The rooftop pool deck, community room and fitness center offer a decidedly different social experience, while creating opportunity for happenstance interaction and new connections among residents. The pool deck floats among the skyscrapers of Center City as the building parapet dips out of the view shed and the Philadelphia skyline is reflected in the pool’s infinity edge, reinforcing the building’s physical and metaphorical location between the universities and the central business district. state-of-the-art biomedical research labs. This visionary interdisciplinary approach fosters collaboration and supports innovation, creating an ecosystem where ideas flow freely to strengthen each program. At the heart of this initiative is the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), which will redefine animal healthcare in New Jersey. Offering the state’s first Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, the SVM also includes an M.S./P.D. in Veterinary Biomedical Science, an MPH degree, B.S. degrees in Veterinary Studies and Veterinary Technology, certifications for veterinary technicians and assistants, and post-doctoral internships and residency programs with specialized board certifications. Dual-degree options such as DVM/MPA, DVM/MBA, and DVM/Ph.D. further supports the school’s commitment to interdisciplinary excellence. With a hybrid learning model emphasizing hands-on experience and plans to recruit 25 top-tier faculty and clinician researchers by 2025, the SVM is set to become a leader in veterinary education. The design centers on a dynamic, collaborative learning environment tailored for experiential education. Led by Erdy McHenry, the planning process adeptly balanced space and budget constraints while navigating an accelerated construction schedule. Innovative solutions were incorporated to enhance functionality, streamline workflows, and support program development, seamlessly blending traditional “teaching hospital” frameworks with modern educational needs. Future adaptability is a cornerstone of the facility’s design. Clinical, wet and dry labs, and research spaces are configured to evolve as needs change, while enclosed support areas and open workspaces provide flexibility for shifting demands. A standout feature is the open-format surgery gallery, equipped with overhead monitors, which invites students to observe procedures up close, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application in a true ‘bench-to-bedside’ fashion. At the heart of the facility is the veterinary hospital, which specializes in companion animal care while partnering with affiliated institutions for large-animal clinical rotations. It features a Community Practice department with a dedicated outpatient waiting area and specialized services in oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, and exotic animal care. Throughout the facility, thoughtful design enhances both function and experience. Perimeter collaboration alcoves, positioned to offer restorative views of the natural landscape, provide spaces for students and staff to recharge and connect. parks across the country there lies a vast inventory of abandoned and underutilized office buildings whose useful life is thought to have expired. Outdated design, inefficient environmental systems and failing building envelopes have rendered these buildings un-leasable in their current condition. A risk-averse financing market makes tear down and re-build the only safe investment because of its predictability compared to pro forma metrics. It is a self-sustaining stalemate that further exacerbates the problem of suburban sprawl as new development consumes green field sites in order to avoid the cost of demolition and the challenges associated with overcoming the negative impressions of these aging and outmoded sites. The re-purposing of Woodlands 1 seeks to define a methodology for repositioning outdated commercial structures by proposing a carefully balanced set of interventions that breathe new life into the building while preserving the best assets of the site and maintaining a sensitivity towards the ecological impact of the structures. Woodlands 1, a two-story former pharmaceutical company office building is burdened with deep floor plates and narrow windows which severely limit the availability of natural daylight to a large portion of the floor plate and making any multi-tenant occupancy scenario virtually impossible in its current state. Creative thinking and a declining cost basis for a vacant 200,000 SF big-box office building in suburban Philadelphia is enabling the repositioning of a “sleeping giant” that preserves the irreplaceable asset of a mature site and avoids the prospect of hundreds of tons of construction waste from ending up in a landfill. Rejecting the traditional office block circulation diagram, the expanded Lobby replaces the traditional corridor and provides a centralized circulation radiating from an internal urban like setting. Utilizing this model, every tenant has a physical connection to the central core regardless of their location within the building. Anchored by a cafe, a grand stair, and the elevator block, the central two-story lobby is further subdivided into a series of intimate gathering spaces through the addition used to define smaller scale social spaces. With extensive amenities and a sensitive attention to maintaining the existing structure, Woodlands 1 reinvents an abandoned structure into a Class A office environment. Location: Grandview Heights, OH Area: 37,000 sf Fire and Police Consultant: Mull &amp; Weithman Architects Synopsis: Erdy McHenry guided the City’s development team in exploring site alternatives for a new municipal facilities complex designed to meet the City’s current and future needs, while honoring the community’s rich civic history. The plan is a multi-phased project, including the demolition of structures currently located on the site, the construction of a new 37,000-square-foot combined municipal facility, and a separate project for a new Parks and Recreation facility elsewhere to replace the one existing on the chosen site The integration of city government, fire, and police all sharing one building is somewhat unique for new municipal facilities today but consistent with how the city currently operates.. The decision to maintain this relationship provides many constituent benefits, such as the special connections it creates between the mayor, the fire chief, and the police chief. However, this mix of functions also creates multiple challenges, not just for issues like the necessary separation of uses, but also the different and evolving community perspectives on municipal, fire, and policing functions. Therefore, the design needed to support elements of safety and privacy, while also encouraging accessibility and civic engagement. After listening to all key stakeholders intended to occupy the Municipal Building, a full program of spaces was defined and tabulated for each department to be located in the new facility, including a listing of shared facilities between departments. The intricate and delicate piecing together of all three major program elements resulted in a more substantial and efficient representation of the city functions than single component would have. In addition to the apparatus bay supporting the fire station’s six emergency vehicles, the fire department program includes a drill practice mezzanine, residential facilities for three shifts of eight EMS/firefighters, administrative offices, and storage rooms for equipment and EMS requirements. The Police Department program includes a mix of administrative offices, patrol officer support spaces, records and evidence storage, a detectives suite, dispatcher suite, booking and detention area and an interior sallyport for transport in and out for prisoners.&nbsp; The city government functions, including the mayor’s office, administrative directors’ offices and city finance all find a home on the second floor along with a large community gathering space used for city council meetings and other functions. Indeed, it is open public spaces, starting with the double-height glazed lobby and seating tiers / grand stair leading to the council chambers that give the facility its true civic life. The reading of the building as a single composition supports the intention to define the well-integrated municipal program within. Silver Award Synopsis: The primary intervention erodes the plaza perimeter to reduce the tunnel-like experience of the underpass.&nbsp; Two small existing courtyards, formerly separated by a looming overpass, are united into a grand court that establishes a properly scaled entry plaza to the College of Liberal Arts.&nbsp; A transparent sculptural volume is inserted into the void of the plaza to connect the two campus levels with a major event space and lobby that serves as a primary gathering space for the College. An elevator, monumental stairways and a bleacher stair connect the street level to the elevated terrace above. Ultimately, this project presents a new, centralized event venue and activities hub for every student at the University while providing unique views of Temple’s iconic Bell Tower. Mazur Hall lobby is visible from afar, offering a renewed prominence, and added functionality for a previously neglected part of campus. This new building at the College of Liberal Arts is at the center of the University’s student life and is designed to accommodate social, professional, educational, and community functions. In a space that was once devoid of much greenery at all, new life has grown. The courtyard infill connects the newly renovated plaza that invites students, faculty, and neighbors to enjoy the lush greenscape.&nbsp; The Plaza includes an array of seating options, from lounge chairs, to shaded tables, to a manicured lawn, that allows its occupants to enjoy the space in any fashion. Creating a retreat from the urban streets, the Plaza brings much needed vegetation to the campus. The highlight of the courtyard infill is the soaring steel hyperbolic paraboloid roof. The expressive shape gestures invitingly to Polett Walk and brings new energy and curiosity to the courtyard below. The wood slat interior ceiling brings a warm glow to the surrounding concrete structures that overlook the Plaza. Several prominent buildings within the University overlook the Plaza. However, in the original design, the buildings lacked visual significance, both on the campus and within the surrounding area. The space needed a sense of identity within the barren plaza. With this intervention, the College of Liberal Arts gained a prominent identity that encourages pride of place. Every student at Temple University passes through Mazur Hall, and the new event space and community hub at the College of Liberal Arts will be at the center of the University’s student life plan for decades to come.
